What a day it has been, it started a bit
later than usual because I took a sleeping pill early in the morning (1am) and it
knocked me out. For some reason I have
been having trouble sleeping which is strange as I feeling ok in myself. The not drinking might have something to do
with it but that has been the furthest from my mind if I honest. I think it is because the days are getting
longer and I am going to bed when it is still light outside. I was in bed at 8pm last night but tossed and
turned from 9 to 11. So I tried reading
giving Arthur Dent a chance to bore me to sleep. Sadly I love Douglas Adams work so much I
ended up finishing the book and I was only half way through it, on to the next
one that sees Arthur arrive at the Restaurant at the End of Universe.
So blurry eyed I had my crumpets and tea,
checked Facebook, the News and a few photography websites and pondered the day
ahead. I had no plans and as I was still
feeling the effects of the sleeping pill driving anywhere was out. Feeling the warmth of the morning sun on the
back of my neck and hearing the birds chirping out the back I decided it was a
camera day. It has been too long and I
needed to feel that buzz again. Now
where to go, what to take photographs of?
It first I thought I would walk down to the town center and do some
street photography but I was conscious that it is half term and there would be
a lot of kids about. I do not feel very
comfortable walking around taking photographs when there are a lot of kids
about in a public place. Parents are
very nervous about that sort of thing, it has got to the stage that one parent
has to get the agreement of others to take videos and photographs at sports
days. So that left Church photography, playing
with my studio or the Nature Reserve and given that it was a beautiful sunny
day the Nature Reserve seemed like the ideal choice. Camera gear checked, iPod charged and
playlist downloaded off I set enjoying the warmth of the sun.
Naturally being a school holiday, well I
assumed it was as the usual train of mum’s, dad’s and kids did not make their
way past the back of the flats, the Nature Reserve was very busy. So what is the difference about taking
photographs at the Nature Reserve with lots of kids about and the town
center I hear you ask? Well people expect and are use
to photographers taking pictures of the birds but to not understand why anyone
would want to take photographs in the town center.
Anyway I spent a couple of hours parking my
bum down in selected spots around the lake taking photographs of Geese, Swan’s
and Dog’s running in and out of the water.
That’s the dogs running in and out, the Geese and Swan’s just swam,
stood and sat there looking at the dogs and people with mild amusement and in
the case of the Geese contempt. I am
never surprised by the behaviour of the birds but some of the humans leave me
wondering, especially the parents or guardians of the darling little people.
When I am not watching the birds I love to
watch people go about their business and when down the Reserve on such a beautiful
day the majority are enjoying the weather, fresh breeze and surroundings, walking
their dogs or watching their kids play.
As with all aspects of life it is the minority that beggar’s belief and
causes me to think hard and ask why? Not
one dog owner let their dogs trouble the wild life and showed complete respect
for it, it is shame the same could not be said for some parents. As they chatted, texted, swap funny stories via
social media their darling little kids are busy throwing stones and sticks at
the birds and when they are bored with that at people and dogs if they could get
away with it. Or they come and stand
right in front of someone trying to take photographs, back to the photographer
at first. Then feeling brave they turn
around and with one finger firmly shoved up a nostril they smile at you. Such little darlings, one even decided to
swish her fishing net at me and hold it over my camera making both of us
wet. The parents engrossed in their
mobile phones I causally looked over the top of my glasses, smiled and said
would you like to do that again? Funnily
enough they decided to go back to attacking the birds and each other. One kid was picking handfuls of stones and
throwing them at the birds and all his dad could do was say “Josh don’t do that
darling it is not nice”. Go figure on
that one if you can. If I had the
strength I would have picked up the parent and thrown him in the water, turned
to Josh and said there’s a bigger target for you.
That could not spoil what was a beautiful
couple of hours, sun, breeze, Simon Webbe on the iPod and most importantly my
camera in my hands gave me. I felt so alive, so
good it made the rest of the day and possibly tomorrow as well. I have to admit I do feel in a very good
place at the moment, nothing much has change and the challenges are still
there. I think what is different is that
I am taking each day as it comes, grown a pair and faced up to some of the more
difficult issues presenting themselves at present all at once. Rather than growing a pair one day, taking
one day at a time the next and burying my head in a problem the next I am doing
it all at once. I feel so confident and
empowered at the moment I could crush a grape.
I did not feel very well Saturday and
yesterday was no better but at no point did I feel sorry for myself. Instead I got on top of it and shook the
issue by the neck, maybe I should have done that to the parents of the brats
(sorry darling kids) at the Reserve today!?
I have spent the last two days keeping a very close eye on my blood
glucose levels taking readings every one to two hours. Now did you know that the difference between
toast with marmalade and just toast is 5.0 on the blood glucose scale? Yesterday at 10am I was 19.8 today 14.8 so it
looks like I am going to have to say good buy to all things sugary from now on,
sniff sniff! Thank god I have got my
photography, work and making love still because at this rate I am going to have
nothing fun left to look forward to! Oh and that are not in any particular order before you say or think anything.
I was going to tell you a story about biro’s
today but I think I leave it there for now, time for some photographs from
today’s trip out. I hope you like them.
Until next time take care.
Si (Socks) x
